Essence examines the complexity of Black womanhood and the limitations of defining it through a singular idea of strength. Rather than presenting identity as fixed, Agoussoye considers essence as something layered and evolving—formed through love, vulnerability, resilience, protection, creation, memory, and lived experience.

Words surrounding the figure evoke qualities often associated with Black women, while her closed eyes and lifted face turn the portrait inward. Strength is present, but it is not offered as the entirety of her identity. The work considers how the cultural expectation of resilience can obscure the equally human capacity to experience softness, exhaustion, vulnerability, and fracture.

At the center of Essence is a contradiction: a woman can possess extraordinary strength and still break. Brokenness does not erase that strength, just as strength does not make her impervious to being broken.

Through this tension, Agoussoye resists reducing Black womanhood to what it can endure. Instead, Essence presents identity as expansive, shifting, and irreducible—a woman existing beyond expectation, simply in the fullness of being.
